Looking the Second Life metaverse through the eyes of reality

Late… Summer

So mesh is here, at last. It actually showed up while I was away, when hurricane Irene severed the link between my RL and SL for more time than I would have believed at first. In the meantime, mesh started its slow spread through the fashion world, but has seen no significant progress in the landscaping scene. With a few nice  examples of mesh trees in the Aditi grid, I thought at least those were set to start the trend in the main grid, but that hasn’t happened yet.

It’s true that mesh right now it’s not for everyone, first because most people resist to upgrade their viewers, and second, because at this time you can’t modify mesh objects (resize, for example). So basically once imported, there’s little you –as owner, not as creator– can do with them. The reason behind #2  are beyond my comprehension, but surely that deters the adoption of this new tool more than anything else. Actually, the ability to resize prims up to 64m has been more useful than mesh itself. So while we wait for mesh trees, let’s take a look at some “traditional” products of late.

Heart’s Garden Center has been one of the best known dealers of leaves and flowers in SL. Their products are usually so crisp and detailed that you can’t go wrong with any of them. Yet, in my opinion, the latest delivery, the oak tree (pictured above in its summer version — an autumn pack is also available)  has surpassed all their previous releases in terms of vividness and realism. I don’t think there’s a better example of how a tree with lush or thick foliage should look like.

Another green-haus to look for gorgeous trees in SL is 3D Trees, a recent newcomer to the garden market. In the short period in which I’ve seen their products inworld, their creator have been adding quite a few stunning specimens. For a sample, take a look at that gorgeous Wisteria decorating my cottage’s frontyard (pictured above). If you’ve seen a better model, let me know.

So here is Nowhere with the new Heart’s oak in the foreground and a Y’s House building where the Asian build used to be. If it were more viable to have more prims for less money, I would have kept them both. Alas, it wasn’t the case.

Such beautiful trees… I only wish the wisteria had scent enabled! 😛
    Thanks for the news.

lol a good idea, but maybe hard to implement. Don’t know if anyone would be willing to open a JIRA to ask for that. 😛

The problem with using mesh for landscaping is that the algorithm used by Linden Lab to interpret mesh, causes the mesh objects occupying more prims than one sculpt, or primitive normal.

A tree like this Garden of the Heart, mesh easily go from 100 prims in your score.

So if Linden Lab does not improve its algorithm for mesh (which I doubt that will happen), we will not see mesh products for landscaping.
