Looking the Second Life metaverse through the eyes of reality

Café Tono

Sure, big buildings are impressive, but I find more comfort at smaller scales. And I’m not talking about the tiny realms of SL, of which I know nothing, but about what can be done in parcels most of us can afford. And that’s probably because I’ve been thinking about moving again, to some estate more alive than the isolated islet I’m currently in. The service here is quite good, and tier couldn’t be better, but the sense of community is nonexistent. The estate managers have been trying, for a very long time, to organize activities –they even used to hold weekly community meetings– but when you have hundreds of sims distributed in a waffle way in and around (clearly not the best practice to harvest a cohesive, committed and supportive group), only a handful of people show up. I applaud their efforts, but obviously that’s still not sufficient to sustain a community. Or people simply don’t care.

If I move or not will ultimately depend on if I find a good place with a good balance of parcel dimensions, prim allowance, tier payment, community spirit, and ground texture… yes, I can’t forget about the last one, or I’d go mad.

I ended up my day taking a few pictures of Café Tono while clapping and waving my hands rhythmically at some qawwali tunes in the voice of the late Nusra Fateh Ali Khan. That’s for inspiration.

Visit Cafe Tono, housed at pomponne,  in the Parta sim.

What are some of your favorite places to get ground terrain textures from? I agree it is hugely important, but finding good ones can me a bit hit or miss at times.

Hi Sean. I can’t tell you what good places are there to get nice ground textures because I really don’t know. Since I’ve never owned a sim, which means I have never had access to that god-mode option where you can change and control that aspect of a sim, I’ve never look for shops that sell ground textures myself. All I can do, when searching for a place to live, is to hop from sim to sim and pick the one with the nicest looking ground (the most naturally looking), or in most cases, the less cheapo, crappy, fantastic one. One of the reasons Mainland is so ugly is because of its ancient set of ground textures all over the landmass (probably a problem of low resolution). I don’t know, but maybe the easiest way to browse for ground textures is the Marketplace (?), there are a lot in there. I’m sure there must be a lot of texture collections in some other websites for sell as well. Sorry if I can’t be of help on this one.

Thanks. No worries. I agree that mainland textures can “take a bit” of getting used to. There are some nice textures out there from KIDD and heart and a few other places like Builders Brewery even. I am always on the look out for more though. I am working through the details of a new estate now, themed around the lakes of Northern Minnesota in the US. Sou thinks like ground textures are on my mind. : )
